Specialized Orthopedic and Rheumatology Procedures

    surgery.jpg
Each physician on staff at The Orthopedic Clinic has completed postgraduate sub-specialty training in surgery techniques and rheumatology. Working as a team they have the knowledge and expertise to provide medical care and treatment as it relates to specific areas of the body including cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine; hand and extremities; shoulder; and hip.

The Scope of Medical Care

scope.jpgOur specialists utilize advanced surgery techniques, fixtures and prosthetics to repair or replace damaged bone joints, nerves, tendons, ligaments and bone damage resulting from disease or injury. Additionally, a specialist in rheumatology provides diagnostic and non-surgical medical treatment for arthritis and related diseases affecting joints, muscles and bones.

Neck, Spine and Back

spine.jpgThe spine consists of individual vertebra that form a column which provides protection for the spinal cord and nerves which communicate with muscles and telegraph sensations and messages to the brain. The surgeons who specialize in surgeries to the spine have completed specialized training in surgical procedures to the spine, neck and back for repair and correction of various medical conditions. Their area of specialization enables them to repair or correct medical conditions including degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis, arthritis, and to surgically repair or correct ruptured discs.

Our spine surgeons perform both “minimally invasive surgery” and “closed” procedures. Some of these procedures require advanced surgical equipment such as specialized operating microscopes that enable the surgeon to magnify areas of repair through a small incision.

Hand and Extremities

hand.jpgOur hand surgeon completed specialty training at University of Alabama Hospitals through a fellowship of hand surgery. Patients are provided surgical and non-surgical treatment of conditions and problems that occur in the hand or upper arm (from the tip of the finger to the shoulder). The Orthopaedic Clinic provides treatment and reconstruction of old injuries, birth defects, nerve compression syndromes such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and damaged or inflamed tendons.

In addition our hand surgeon is experienced in the latest surgical techniques for repairing nerves, tendons, joints, and bone damage resulting from injury or disease. An example is endoscopic Carpal Tunnel surgery, which is less invasive and less traumatic than traditional surgery. With less post-surgery trauma for the patient, recovery time is usually shortened significantly.

Shoulder

knee.jpgThe shoulder is classified as a ball and socket joint. It is the most mobile joint in the body, and is also one of the most unstable. The most common surgical procedures performed by our surgeons include repairs to torn muscles and tendons, removal of bone spurs, rotator cuff repair, and shoulder joint repair and replacement. Arthropscopy is a procedure used to “look” inside the shoulder joint to locate and correct problems. Other surgery techniques include tightening ligaments and repair of torn capsular attachments and prosthetic shoulder replacement.

Hip

hip.jpgHip fractures and joint problems are a serious health problem which require immediate treatment. Our board certified surgeons provide  modern treatment and surgery procedures to help patients get back on their feet as soon as possible. In treating fractures our surgeons utilize advanced surgical procedures, fixation devices and surgical screws to repair fractures. They also perform joint repair surgery and total joint replacement using prosthetics.

Knee

knee.jpgKnee problems resulting from injury are commonly diagnosed and treated arthroscopically. The “scope” allows the surgeon to look inside through a small incision to determine the nature and extent of injuries. Using small incisions special surgical instruments are inserted for the necessary repairs. Depending on the extent of injury or disease, traditional surgery may be used to repair and install fixation devices.

Rheumatology

arthritis.jpgOur rheumatologist is an internal medicine specialist who has completed specialty training in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles and bones. There are more than 100 types of these related diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, lupus and gout. Access to a specialist knowledgeable of these diseases is invaluable in determining a correct diagnosis early so that treatment can begin early.
